THE maiden edition of the National Students Awards came off last Saturday at the Zenith University College, La, Accra with University Hall, Katanga, of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology being a big winner on the night.
Katanga who made their presence ‘very felt’ at the event took home three awards- Hall of Residence of the Year, Gyama Group of the Year and the Overall Best Hall of the Year.
The exciting event which brought together students from all the tertiary institutions in Ghana did not only honour deserving students but also saw personalities such as former president, J. A. Kufuor, DCOP Tetteh Yohuno of the Police Service and NPP MP-Elect for the Kwabre East Constituency, Miss Francesca Oteng-Mensah, taking home awards too.
Although the event started three hours late, every feeling of resentment left the auditorium when the event finally took off with an opening act by Gombilla Toufik, a student poet. He eloquently and dramatically performed a poem titled Social Media that got the patrons cheering loudly.
Others who shared the stage with him to entertain patrons included D.Cryme and other student musicians such as Ephraim, Sky Legends and Talantu.
There was also choreography from dance group, KKT and David and Associates. DJ Fox from TOP FM was also around to provide useful ‘mixes’ to spice up the event which was compered by Adjoa Amofa Osei and Jay KD.
Former president J. A. Kufuor and DCOP Tetteh- Yohuno received citations for being students’ ambassadors and believing in the cause of students.
Miss Francisca Oteng-Mensah who is also a student of KNUST, took home the Student Personality of the Year award, Boi Nii Lamptey Williams from UPS (Most Influential Student of the Year), Clement Yeboah of GIMPA (Most Outstanding Sudent of the Year), Michael Kwadjo Nketsiah of KNUST (the Student Activist of the Year) and Davis Fobih of University of Legon (Most Outstanding SRC President).
That is not all, Sylvanus Bedzrah (Student Author of the Year) for his book, Bloody Ingrate, while Best Campus News Network went to myjcr.com, NO YAWA(Campus Group of the Year), Mensah Sarbah Hall (Best Hall Mixed) and Adeshe Hall of University of Cape Coast (UCC) won the Female Hall of Residence of the Year.
The National Students’ Awards was jointly organised by
the various student groups such as the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS), Ghana National Union of Polytechnic Students(GNUPS), University Students’ Association of Ghana (USAG), Ghana Union of Professional Students (GUPS), and the Graduate Students’ Association of Ghana (GRASAG).
