Modelling does not pay in Ghana

By Forgive Adjoa Forfoe
04 July 2016
He has been modeling for nine years now and has many awards and accolades to his name as proof.

One look at him and one may think he’s got it all running smooth for him.  However, award-winning Ghanaian international model, Stephen Kojo Owusu, says modeling in Ghana is not a means of livelihood like it is elsewhere as it does not rake in the cash.
‘‘Models don’t get paid  or are underpaid after doing a work, not fed and are taken for granted when they go for shows. It’s difficult for people to accept the truth but modeling in Ghana is a hobby, not a job to live by.  People lie to models because they know that after all, at the end of the day, no one will hold them to ransom for their actions’’ he said.
Model, Stephen Kojo Owusu

To survive therefore, Stephen, aside being a model, also acts, runs a pub at Ashongman Estates and organises events. He blamed the lack of unity and cohesion between the various modeling associations as the main causes of models’ being sidelined in Ghana.
‘‘I see two associations trying to gather models to fight for their rights; Models Association of Ghana and Models’  Union of Ghana. It is good that at least there are people who have seen what models go through in Ghana. However, I get worried that in the fight for such a good cause, there are two different mouthpieces which I believe are based on personal interests.
If the government wants to intervene in the plight of the model, which of them is the Government going to deal with when addressing the issues? because they are two different associations with different structures claiming to help models’’ he said.
He also bemoaned the lack of structures and ignorance as challenges that make society maltreat models.
‘‘We don’t have the structures to make our industry vibrant and therefore make us able to live off our job. Therefore, people use the services of models and refuse to pay them, because at the end of the day, they walk around free since there is nobody or any strong organisation to compel them to pay the model.
There are no standards for the industry here. Most of the models themselves don’t know which categories of models they are because most of the modeling agencies that train them are ignorant of such things themselves. At the end of the day, the model turns out as a poor product since he or she doesn’t know his or her way around his or her supposed job.
The Blood and Chocolate actor suggested ways to help up the modeling industry in Ghana.
‘‘All the modeling agencies should come under one association which would be the mouthpiece for all models and their agents and agencies. A united front for all the models in the country will ensure that certain standards are set that will regulate how models are contracted in the society. It’s a serious issue, currently as we are speaking, models are going through a lot.  One of us has been suspended because he tried fighting to be paid whereas the organisers of the Mercedes Benz Fashion Show which we were going to be featured in had decided not to pay us. He has every right to demand payment, it’s just that there was no one to speak for him and he also erred by using violence to send his message home.
That’s why I am also advising that every model must get must get a side job. If you stay at home, the little money you get from modeling won’t buy you the clothes and accessories you need for modeling contracts. The modeling world is squeezing us tight, so we must get something else doing in order to bring in the cash to brand ourselves right’’ he said.
Some of the awards Stephen has to his credit include Male Model of the year (2015 Fashion Icon Awards), Male Model of the Year (2015 AFROMA Fashion Awards), nominee for West Africa Fashion Awards twice in a roll and winner of the event in 2016.  He was the face of then Zain Telecommunications on billboards, flyers, posters and on the internet, Printex TV adverts and also Face of Printex among others.
He also featured in Irene Logan’s I’m in Love with the Devil video and has starred in movies such as Contract by Sparrow Productions, Blood and Chocolate by Evance Productions and part of the top ten finalists in the Spirited Actor by Tracy Moore in 2011.

Gospel artiste, Obaasima Mercy, has launched her new album titled, Wahamba Nathi at the Kasoa Pentecost Church, near Pink FM last Monday.

The album features gospel artistes such as Nana Safo and Mix Bee. The nine songs on the album are  W’ahamba Nathi ( He walks with us), Juda, Mighty God, Tie mesunfre ( hear my cry),Christmas Time, Yehowa, Ayeyi Wura,Wo ye ohene ampa and Nyame sunsum.
Obaasima Mercy

As the name indicates, Wahamba Nathi, a South African Zulu word, is about how people can achieve nothing without the assistance of God.
On Mighty God, Ayeyi Wura, Yehowa and Wo Ye Ohene ampa, she praises God for all His blessings and the belief that the crucifixion of Jesus Christ brings salvation to the world.

The birth of Christ on Christmas and the divine power to the Christian is what Obaasima  Mercy talks about on Christmas time.
On Nyame Sunsum and Tie Mesunfre, the singer pleads for the spirit of God to hear her cry and assist her to live a righteous life.
In an interview with Showbiz, Obaasima Mercy also known as Obaasima Mercy Hammond, a business woman who has been singing for the past 12 years said, “I have realised Ghanaians love South African music and their style as well. However, I have also observed that no artiste in Ghana is bringing music lovers in Ghana that South African style, so I am filling the gap.
According to her, the gospel music fraternity is growing due to its diversity.
“We have gospel reggae, hip hop and other beats to capture music lovers. However, I think the recycling of old songs is too much. Let’s be original in our songs, like the secular musicians are.  Even if we use old songs, let’s add our part to promote originality and make it different from the old version,” she stated.
The launch was graced by NPP Presidential candidate Nana Akuffo Addo and other gospel artistes such as Nana Safo, Ruth Akutek among others.

A sound engineer by profession, Fiscian, real name Harry Fiscian, who has been doing music for almost two decades, told Showbiz in an interview after the launch that his commitment as a gospel artiste is to win the “youth for Christ”.

“I’m not into music to compete with anyone and boast of being the best. We are all unique in our own ways and that is why I wouldn’t compare myself to anyone. Being in the limelight attracts you to many people from diverse backgrounds, but my focus is to mentor this generation,” he stated.

Ghana Must Live Again for April 30

By Forgive Adjoa Forfoe
23 April 2016
With just a few months to the 2016 elections, various organisations, corporate bodies and those in the arts industry are coming together to preach peace and the need to tolerate one another irrespective of political affiliations.
And come Saturday, April 30, at the National Theatre, the National Dance Company of Ghana, in conjunction with Germinal Consult, will stage a play titled, Ghana Must Live Again.
The 6: 00 pm play has a rich cast of Adjetey Annang (Pusher), Edinam Atatsi, Akorfa Edzeani, Chief Moomen, Naa Ayeley Ardeyfio, Pamela Karikari and Kojo Yankson, among others.

Ascene from the play

Ghana Must Live Again is a project that seeks to address the many pertinent issues that face Ghana as a country and the role citizens must play to ensure the progress of the country.
The production will blend poetry, dance and music as a complete story to address the issues.
In an interview with the Daily Graphic, Georgina Asabere, the Business Manager of Germinal Consult, the organisers, said the production, directed by Nii Mantse, is a call on Ghanaians to take a shared responsibility for the country’s present state and for those in the creative arts industry to also participate in nation building which goes beyond their everyday performance.

‘‘Once upon a time, we saw a happy united front, but today, we are very individualistic in all our ways. If things will work again, it will depend on all of us doing things right, and not one political party. What has gone wrong? Who is to blame? What is the way forward?

“There is the need for a change in our general attitude and behaviour towards our country and not the responsibility of a political party. It is also a wake-up call to those of us in the arts to know that our role in nation building transcends our personal interests,” she stated.

According to her, the aim of the play is to instil in the patrons the need to be patriotic and work for the collective interest of the country saying, “I believe we can all work for Ghana to live again”.

Ruth with "Woye Ohen"

By Forgive Adjoa Forfoe
 02 June 2016
She has been backing gospel musicians for years and though she still does, gospel musician, Ruth, believes she is well groomed to lend her talent to the industry. That was an inspiration to release her first album, Liquid Prayers two years ago and she’s back with a new song titled, Woye Ohen.
Released in December last year, Woye Ohen is a mid- tempo song rendered in Fante Twi and English. The song, which talks about God’s royalty and His everlasting reign, starts with Ruth praising God in Twi and talking about how His kingdom is above all others. She also sings about the faithfulness of God ‘‘Oh lord, you’ve been so faithful to me, Mighty God You’ve always been there for me, Showing me your kindness, mercies and love’’ she sings the chorus.
Ruth

In all, the arrangement of the song in terms of its rhythm, lyrics and Ruth’s strong voice which obviously is an asset makes the song soothing to the ears.
Talking about her “marriage with music”, Ruth, born Ruth Adjei, said her talent is hereditary because she was born into a family where music ‘reigns’.
‘‘I was born into a family of music; everyone in my house sings. My elder brother is with a choral group in Accra, Harmonious Chorale and my other siblings were all part of the ever famous Winneba Youth Choir. As a singer myself, I’m a member of E’mpraise’ group,” the Human Resource Management student at the University College of Management Studies(UCOMS), said.

A product of the Professional Institute of Journalism, Accra, Ruth has backed many gospel singers including Joe Mettle, Uncle Ato, Eugene Zuta, Gifty Osei, SP Sarpong, No Tribe, Cindy Thompson, Hannah Marfo and the late Comfort Annor. She has also been featured by artistes such as Eugene Zuta, Stephen Tetteh and Kobby Mantey.

Ruth says, she is inspired by the passion to preach about “hope in the midst of life’s difficulties” and is currently working on the release of two albums by the end of the year.
